Naples International Airport is the international airport serving the Southern Italian region of Campani and the city of Naples. The airport’s official Italian name is Aeroporto di Napoli-Capodichino Ugo Niutta. Capodichino is the name of the district in which the airport sits while Ugo Niutta was a decorated WWII pilot.

Naples Airport has the IATA code NAP and the ICAO code LIRN.

The airport originates from 1910 when the district of Capodichino hosted the first flight exhibition there. The airport was then known as “Campo di Marte” and it is still one of the names the locals use for the airport. Naples Airport goes by many names and other than the ones already mentioned it is also known as Capodichino Airport and Capodichino International Airport

“Campo di Marte” became a military airport during World War I in order to defend the town against attacks.

It was used as a combat airfield by the United States Army Air Forces and Royal Air Forces during World War II.

Commercial traffic began in 1950 and the airport is classified as a military airport opened to commercial air traffic 24 hours/day. The airport is operated by GE.S.A.C and it is a focus city for EasyJet, Ryanair, Volotea and Wizzair.

The airport has one single terminal building that handles all domestic as well as international flights. Airside is divided into three sections; A, B and C. The landside ground level houses both the check-in area, with 55 check-in desks, and the arrivals area.

The airport does not feature any jet-bridges and buses or sometimes walk boards are used. Several of the terminal’s areas have been updated, expanded and refurbished in recent years.

The airport has one single runway and it has an asphalt surface. It is 2,641 m/8,622 ft long.

The airport saw 2,779,946 passengers come through it in 2020, a decrease from 2019’s 10,860,068 passengers (due to the Covid-19 pandemic).

Transfers at Naples International Airport

Rental Cars – Car rental counters can be found either in the terminal’s arrivals area or at the rental car area a short way from the terminal. Shuttles depart from outside the arrivals area every 10 minutes from morning to evening each day. All companies’ vehicles are located in the rental car area so the complimentary shuttle will still have to be taken by customers of the car rental companies found in the terminal. Buses – Alibus airport shuttle service runs between the airport and Naples City every day of the week beginning in early mornings and ending around midnight. Buses stop only at a few well-chosen locations in Naples City, such as the Piazza Garibaldi close to Naples Central Station and in the Port.

Taxis – It is important to only use taxi cabs from the official taxi rank located right outside the arrivals area. Other drivers might approach travelers offering rides, but these drivers are not licensed and should be ignored or kindly declined as they often trick customers and charge more than the flat rate set by the authorities.

Shared taxis for a flat rate of 6 € per person are available at the shared taxi rank located 30 m in front of the terminal’s arrivals area. Trains – There is no train, rail or metro station at the airport as of yet, but there are plans for a metro line connection to be taken into operation in 2024.
